Wilson’s Brigade was an actual division—infantry, I think—in the American Civil War. I think of these cottonwoods as living soldiers advancing in the fog. There’s a certain asymmetry and formality to this hesitant bunch of cottonwoods that reminds me of uncertain soldiers.
